But….

March 12, 2011 Leave a comment

… if all religions have their own holy books, then how do we know our religion, beliefs, are right? Have you ever wondered that? After all, all of the “holy books” encourage people to have good behavior. What makes Christianity different?

Simply put… the resurrection of Jesus and all of the historical evidence that supports it. This Sunday night, we will be joining the adult class for this one session to hear Pastor Chuck share about some of the historical evidence supporting the resurrection of Jesus.

Doing what we don’t want to do…

January 12, 2011 Leave a comment

Pastor Bill came into the youth room asking the youth if they had friends in the group and encouraged them to get to know each other. I encouraged them to pray for each other through the week and ask to see how each others week has gone. Building these relationships are key to an effective youth group ministry.

Sunday night the focus was on Mark 6:14-29, the beheading of John the Baptist by King Herod.

The question was asked, “why did Herod have John beheaded? Was it something he had been wanting to do, or was it due to the ‘peer pressure’ he was receiving from those around him?”

That question led into a discussion of how in our everyday world that we live in we will experience peer pressure, whether we are the ones receiving it, or at times we may even be the ones doing it.

We also looked back in Matthew 14:13 to see how Jesus reacted when He found out what had happened to John the Baptist, with all the power, what did He choose to do? Did He hunt down and kill Herod and his friends? Did he remove him from his upper society position and have him plagued with diseases and live out the rest of his life in misery? No, Jesus with all His power, simply “went to a solitary place”.  Mr. Jason mentioned how he always found that interesting, because if he would have been in Jesus’ shoes, he said he would have went ‘bonkers’ on those people.

So how would you react if you were in Jesus’ place?

Do we sometimes put ourselves in situations that we don’t want to be in like Herod did?

The Holiday Feast Continues

January 7, 2011 Leave a comment

I know that I haven’t posted much recently. That’s because I was following the example Jesus. What example was that you ask? You’ll need to be at youth Sunday night to find out (okay, if you really can’t make it then send me an e-mail or text and I’ll let you know).

Did you get enough to eat over the holidays? Sunday night as we look at Mark chapter 6 (you can also read Matthew 14 and Luke 9), we will discuss what Herod had brought in on a platter at a banquet for his guests as well as look at how Jesus provided for over 5,000 people.

So read the three chapters noted above and we look forward to seeing you Sunday night @ 6pm!

A prophet in their hometown

December 14, 2010 Leave a comment

This past Sunday night we looked at Mark 6:1-6 where Jesus was rejected by people in His hometown of Nazareth.

We thought about how we still might be rejecting Jesus in certain scenarios, like when we are with certain friends or engaged in certain activities.

We also discussed how at times we too feel the same rejection that Jesus did. Everyone then shared how and when they feel respected and when they are not respected within their own worlds (i.e. home and school).

Discussion questions:

Are there times when you disrespect and reject Jesus in your daily life?

Are there times that you feel disrespected in your “hometown” (home, school, activities)?

Remember that Jesus knows how you feel, He’s been there.

“God, forgive us when we reject or disrespect You and give us the strength we need to stand up for You, even when others reject and disrespect us”

I Get No Respect!

December 9, 2010 Leave a comment

Have you ever felt that way? That no one respects you? That you need to leave home to have others show respect? We’ll be taking a look at Mark chapter 6 this week and discussing that very topic. In verse 4 we see that, Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”

Jesus knows how you feel, so take a few minutes to read Mark 6 before Sunday night and come ready to discuss this topic with any questions/thoughts you may have about it.
